Reading and Financial Literacy Month

The Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland, Inc. launched its Read Across Maryland program in partnership with the Governor's Office of Community Initiatives. This annual program encourages and raises awareness of reading and financial literacy. It calls for every individual in every community to celebrate reading and financial literacy during October. Accordingly, Governor Larry Hogan proclaims October as Reading and Financial Literacy Month.
Read Across Maryland will focus on educating individuals on the importance of reading and financial literacy. In cities and towns across Maryland, educators, students, librarians, legislators, athletes, parents, grandparents, and others develop Read Across Maryland activities to bring reading and financial literacy excitement to people of all ages. The Governor’s office, mayors, county executives, and elected officials recognize the role that reading and finances play within our communities. All schools and nonprofits within the state of Maryland are encouraged to partner with the Caucus and the Governor's Office of Community Initiatives to motivate students to become successful readers and financial stewards.

University of Maryland Extention Financial Education Programs 10/09/2019 to 12/31/2019 The poverty and subsequent hunger that exists in every community can be reduced by empowering children with early financial capabilities, trickling financial empowerment up through parents and caregivers, and spreading lessons and resources out to Maryland schools and afterschool programs. University of Maryland Extension provides basic financial education for young people and adults through research-based programs, often in collaboration with non-profits and community organizations. Particular to youth financial education, UME educators are currently involved in schools, afterschool programming, 4-H Clubs across the state and work with children and youth at risk and their families. UME Educators, specialists in adult education, adapt youth financial education curricula to deliver train-the-teacher/youth leader sessions to expand the scope and diversity of outreach. In addition, UME has become a recognized facilitator of advance training for personal finance educators through the Personal Finance Seminar for Professionals, an annual conference that provides training and updates on matters relevant to helping the individuals and communities that we serve. :::::: Check programs for adults, family, and youth here: [1] https://breathingroom.umd.edu/2019/10/03/october-is-reading-and-financial-literacy-month-in-maryland/ [2] https://extension.umd.edu/money [3] https://extension.umd.edu/topics/money :::::: In 2018, the University of Maryland Extension (UME) Financial Wellness Team conducted numerous programs across the state of Maryland. There was a total of 333 programs that were facilitated. For direct services, we had a total of 8182 participants; 272 of which were professionals or volunteers that were trained in a train the trainer program such as our Personal Finance Seminar for Professionals and our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Training these professionals and volunteers indirectly impacts 226,062 consumers.

Read BRAILLE Across Maryland 10/01/2019 to 10/31/2019 In accordance with The Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland, Inc., and the Governor’s Office of Community Initiatives, The Maryland State Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (LBPH) will support the Read Across Maryland initiative by launching our “Read Braille Across Maryland” during the month of October. A 2009 study from the National Federation of the Blind found only 10% of visually impaired children in the US are now learning to read Braille. Braille is a necessary skill to acquire for the success of every blind or visually impaired child. LBPH wants to advocate every organization, agency, family, and child to read BRAILLE. During the month of October, LBPH will disseminate our “Braille Bettie” to local schools, agencies, organizations, and families. Show your support for Braille literacy by taking a photo of yourself reading Braille books, magazines, or literature with Braille Bettie. Post it with the hashtag #ReadBrailleMD to our social media platforms. www.facebook.com/mdlbph www.twitter.com/md_lbph Pass Bettie to a friend, family member, or colleague and keep Bettie reading throughout the month of October. Let’s show Maryland how much we value reading Braille and support the READ ACROSS MARYLAND initiative.
