Brief Description of Event:
Building on the success of our first ever Potomac Highlands Regional Tourism and Creative Economy Summit on Wednesday, August 23rd, Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College is partnering with Keep West Virginia Wild and Wonderful, the Trough General Store and the Appalachian Forest Heritage Area for a river clean-up day on Saturday, September 16th. The South Branch Valley is one of the treasures in the Eastern United States, seeing trash in and on the banks of the South Branch River is heart breaking. We need to develop an attitude and culture that will preserve this beautiful river. One day of assistance to rid this treasure of unwanted debris could make a huge difference. We will have four trips (5 kayaks at each point): -Petersburg Bridge to the Fisher Bridge South -Fisher Bridge South to the Old Fields Bridge -Old Fields Bridge to McNeil -McNeil to the Trough General Store Clean-up will also be at each access point. The idea was presented at the tourism summit and greeted warmly by the over 100 attendees of the event as a great starting point for further regional cooperation. Therefore, Eastern is challenging the entire Potomac Highlands region to join with us and start your own effort to clean your local rivers. “The rivers in the Potomac Highlands of WV are a regional and national asset that require good stewardship from all of us.  Clean-up on the South Branch will begin at 9:30am on September 16th at the Hawse Plaza in Moorefield, WV. Only 20 boats are available and space is limited, so be sure to call or message ahead of time if you are interested in volunteering. River access points will also be picked-up – join us to keep our rivers clean, safe and beautiful – additional volunteers are welcome – no limit to river access volunteers.
