Brief Description of Event:
Why Power Packs? Children are particularly vulnerable to the terrible effects of poverty. The Food for Others/Power Pack Program (P3) helps guarantee that students at high risk of food insecurity on the weekends will have access to healthy food when not in school over the weekends. Food for Others also works in partnership with Britepaths’ “Food4Thought” program. Through coordination with Parent Teacher Associations, social workers, and staff at participating Fairfax County Public Schools, children needing food assistance over the weekends are identified and Power Packs are made available. How VIC Mount Vernon Community Day to Serve works: Each house of worship or organization collects recommended non-perishable food and drink items for a chosen number of Power Packs and brings these items to the VIC Mount Vernon Community Day to Serve location with their volunteers who then will join together with other volunteers to assemble the Power Packs. A list of Power Pack “Suggested Foods” is included with this packet. Ziplock bags for the Power Packs will be provided. Last year more than 250 people from churches, mosques, and other groups participated with energy and joy at the Mount Vernon Day to Serve. Because of their efforts, more than 600 Power Packs were delivered to Food for Others/Power Pack Program (P3).
