A generous spirit

Some of the greatest joys from service can by found in watching the faces of those giving service. In 2013, the St. Rafael School and Nursery organized a food and supplies drive to benefit the Stepping Stones Shelter. This project was a wonderful opportunity to do some good while engaging children and letting them experience the value of giving service.

Mayor Bowser of DC issues Day to Serve Proclamation

Since the beginning, the District of Columbia has been at the heart of Day to Serve. Over the past 3 years, hundreds of DC residents have answered the call to feed the hungry and make their communities better each September. Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser issued a proclamation recognizing Day to Serve in the district for 2015. The proclamation recognizes the importance Day to Serve in bringing together neighborhoods in and around the nation's capitol as well as the countless hours of service given.

Our parks have been beautified, our blood banks have been filled, our roads are void of trash, and our neighbors have been fed. While these are just a few of the reasons why we come together each year, it is really the “coming together” that truly makes Day to Serve such a success.

Feeding the Hungry and Learning about Hunger in Hampton Roads

The Virginia Peninsula Foodbank is a remarkable place. Located in Hampton, Virginia it boasts a huge warehouse filled with shelves reaching two or three stories high and provides food to over 200 charitable organizations in the greater Peninsula area. Since it was founded nearly 30 years ago, it has provided over 117 million meals.

Thirty thousand pounds of food sounds like a lot of food, but as the folks at the Foodbank explained it’s actually quite small compared to the needs of hungry men, women, and children in the Peninsula area. Our region has the highest level of food insecurity in the state, with a food insecurity level of 13.9 percent.

Thank you, to the 120 people who bought tickets through the promotion, raising $600 to support Parks & People’s efforts to make Baltimore a cleaner, greener, happier and healthier city!
