First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe visisted the Richmond Feed More food bank to receive a large food donation from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The donation provided approxmiately 17,000 meals to Virginia familes.

Some of the greatest joys from service can by found in watching the faces of those giving service. In 2013, the St. Rafael School and Nursery organized a food and supplies drive to benefit the Stepping Stones Shelter. This project was a wonderful opportunity to do some good while engaging children and letting them experience the value of giving service.

As we hang up our rakes, put away our work gloves and look back on this Day to Serve season, do we really see what’s been accomplished?

 

Our parks have been beautified, our blood banks have been filled, our roads are void of trash, and our neighbors have been fed. While these are just a few of the reasons why we come together each year, it is really the “coming together” that truly makes Day to Serve such a success.

Feeding the Hungry and Learning about Hunger in Hampton Roads

The Virginia Peninsula Foodbank is a remarkable place. Located in Hampton, Virginia it boasts a huge warehouse filled with shelves reaching two or three stories high and provides food to over 200 charitable organizations in the greater Peninsula area. Since it was founded nearly 30 years ago, it has provided over 117 million meals.

Thirty thousand pounds of food sounds like a lot of food, but as the folks at the Foodbank explained it’s actually quite small compared to the needs of hungry men, women, and children in the Peninsula area. Our region has the highest level of food insecurity in the state, with a food insecurity level of 13.9 percent.
